Accessibility arrangements:
The Nursery environment is very accessible and meets the current disability regulations. There are no stairs in our building and we have ramp access. We have toys and equipment at your child’s level. Our garden is all on one level and it laid to paved. We do not have a disabled toilet with wheelchair access, however, there is room to access the toilets available with the help of an adult. We have a small child’s step for use with the toilet and wash basin. There are seats which fit onto the adult toilet to make sitting safer. We can adapt our provision to accommodate the individual needs of a child. There is parking available outside the Nursery.
How does your service cater for children and families with SEND:
Pam Elliott has 14 years’ experience in the role and has worked with children with a wide range of needs. The Nursery has links with a range of support networks and these include; Early Years Support Team, Health Visitors, Early Years Communicators, SALT (Speech & Language Therapy Service), Family Outreach Service, Children’s Centre’s. The Nursery also have two fully trained SENCO’s - all staff are trained in Child Protection. We have a fully trained Health & Safety Officer and a member of staff is trained in Food Hygiene. We also have a good relationship with all the local feeder schools, and this will make the process of moving to a new setting much easier for your child.
How will staff support my child's needs:
The qualified and experienced staff plan a varied and broad curriculum for all the children by providing a range of activities. The children are continually learning new skills & benefitting from social interaction in a fun and stimulating environment. All children will have a learning journey which is an ongoing document. You are welcome to view and contribute to this at any time. From the learning journey observations we can identify a childs next steps. These are reviewed each term. A development tracker is then completed 3 times a year which will highlight any gaps in your childs development. Your childs key person will develop a strong bond with your child, which will start with a home visit; and we will work with you to ensure your child is happy and settled at Nursery. We have excellent communication amongst the staff and share all information regarding the children on a daily basis. For children with SEND all of the above applies with additional support for the child and family from the 2 qualified SENCOs within the setting. The Nursery will be flexible to support each childs individual needs eg; allowing them to start later or leave earlier to make transition from home to pre-school smoother. If the staff have any concerns regarding your child they would initially talk to you and with your permission they would refer your child to the Early Years Support Team .Parents will be involved throughout the process and are encouraged to speak to a member of staff should they wish to at any time.
Staff training experience:
All staff have a lot of experience with working with children with special needs. We endeavour to teach Makaton sign language to all our children in order that they are all able to communicate using different approaches Our SENCo has over 14 years’ experience supporting children with a wide range of needs and disabilities. The trained SENCO’s will regularly update their training. Nursery staff attend any relevant training course run by HertsCC and if needed staff would attend specific training for working with children with SEND
